Are Men the Weaker Sex?
According to a new study, when it comes to immune systems, it seems as if this is true. This study reveals that there truly is an illness that is called “man flu.” This is due to the fact that men are much less resistant to developing pneumonia and other illnesses of the respiratory system.
In this study a group of Scientists from Harvard University made the revelation that in females, the sex hormone estrogen actually strengthens their immune system. Since men lack this hormone, they are suffering because of the lack of it.
The study was published in Life Sciences, a medical journal, and showed that a simple dose of estrogen was effective for curing bacterial pneumonia in both male and female lab mice. The study was led by Professor Lester Kobzik from the School of Public Health at Harvard University. His findings stated that female mice actually showed an increase in resistance to infection. This resistance was linked to NOS3, or nitric oxide synthase 3, which is activated by the release of estrogen.
Once the team introduced the bacteria streptococcus pneumoniae into the lungs of these mice, it was found that treating the illness with estrogen actually accelerated their recover.
In a second round of this study, the team actually removed the gene responsible for the production of nitric oxide synthase 3, and noticed that the female mice had actually lost their resistance to becoming infected.
The team hopes that this discovery will be used to make some improvements in resistance to both common and serious lung illnesses and to prevent the flu from turning into pneumonia. Professor Kobzik stated that these findings will be useful in helping to reduce the risk of developing secondary bacterial pneumonia during flu season or pandemic flu.
Strengthening Your Immune System
Your immune system is the internal ability of your body to fight off viruses, disease, and bacteria, and is a very vital part of your biological composition. Even though it seems men are the weaker sex when it comes to their immune system, there are some ways that you can strengthen it.
A zinc deficiency can result in a weak immune system. Zinc is responsible for creating T-lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that work to fight off infections. You should be aware that it’s not difficult to supplement your zinc consumption, and to avoid becoming sick. You can find zinc supplements at most health stores and drugstores. Additionally, it is contained in many foods such as peanuts, wheat germ, liver, and even beef.
Take Vitamin C
Another great tool for giving your immune system a boost is Vitamin C. There have been numerous studies that support the ability of Vitamin C to boost immunity. In fact, in one study done on South Africans, it was revealed that those subjects who took 1,000 milligrams of Vitamin C per day noted a 20 percent increase in the antibodies that assist the body with fighting off foreign cells. Vitamin C can be easily found in most stores. The FDA recommends that you take 60 milligrams of Vitamin C per day. Additionally, you can find it in fruits such as kiwi, grapefruit, strawberry, oranges, and papaya.
Probiotics are naturally found in the digestive system. You can also supplement with dairy products, especially certain cheeses and dairy products. A study done in 2009 and published in the Postgraduate Medicine health journal revealed that probiotics can actually strengthen the ability of the body to fight off the flu, which was a landmark discovery, when you consider the fact that around 200,000 Americans are put in the hospital every year due to the flu. Additionally, the flu kills around 36,000 people every year.
Though this study revealed that “man flu” is a very real illness, due to the fact that men don’t have protective estrogen in their bodies, it is a fact that there are things that can be done to strengthen their immune systems and make them much less likely to become sick.
In addition to taking supplements, you can change to a very healthy and natural diet by consuming lots of fruits and veggies, which all contain vital nutrients, such as zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin B complex and more. Additionally, probiotics are a great source of health- which, once again, you can find in supplement form or you can get it naturally through dairy products such as yogurt and cheeses.Tagged
