With any new health trend, there will be cons and pros. While the pros are weighted much higher by those who are in favor of juicing fruits and vegetables for their diets, there are cons that need to be looked at before making this decision.

The Food and Drug Administration released a study that found that in rare cases, juicing can lead to serious foodborne illnesses. When you eat any kind of raw food, you are facing the chances of eating something that can cause diarrhea, vomiting or even more serious situations like E.coli, kidney failure and hepatitis. The reason why the juiced form of fruit and vegetable juice bought at the grocery store is safer for you is the process in which it goes through to kill the dangerous pathogens. If you want to juice at home and prevent any chance of developing any of the mentioned ailments, you should wash your fruits and vegetables before juicing and then drink raw juice afterwards. This would be your best way of staying healthy.

Something else you should keep in mind is the shelf life of any juices made at home. Some people may want to make a week’s worth of fresh vegetable juice for their family and just store in their refrigerator, but that is not the best thing to do. Freshly made juice should be consumed immediately and not stored. If you store the juice, you are facing the chances of it developing certain bacteria that can be dangerous to your health when consumed.

These studies didn’t look at the chances of bacteria growing; rather they looked at the ability of the fruits and vegetables maintaining their nutritional values without any fiber. For those that have diabetes, juicing might not be the best avenue for you to get your daily intake of fruits and vegetables.
