The Importance of Estrogen for Men

The Importance of Estrogen for Men

importance of estrogen for men

For the most part, you will never hear men ask each other if they got all the estrogen they need to stay healthy in their later years. When you’re on the tennis court, hitting the links or at the bar watching the game, this is a topic that usually doesn’t come right behind cars, sports and women. It usually wouldn’t even come after talking about feelings or a colonoscopy. Despite the lack of desire towards talking about estrogen, it is still something that is important for the health of men, especially when you hit the age of 40. When men reach the age of 40, their testosterone is often part of the conversation because these levels naturally drop, but where exactly does estrogen fit in?

What is Estrogen?

Estrogen is a group of compounds within the body that are important to the menstrual and estrous reproductive cycles. While these hormones are usually commonly found in women and are considered sexual hormones, they can have a positive effect in the male body when used properly with a combination of testosterone.

How does your body get Estrogen?

Estrogen is something that develops naturally in your body, but it is also something you can manually add using various methods. One method would be using estrogen pills. These pills are exactly how they sound and will add the chemical to your body by ingesting pills once a day.

Another way to add estrogen to your body is to improve and maintain a healthy diet. First and foremost, you need to avoid foods that have high levels of sugars and carbohydrates. While avoiding those foods, you will want to add more lean proteins to your die, as well as goods with high fiber counts and low fat totals.

One substance you will want to ensure your food has a high total of is phytoestrogens. This substance is commonly found in plants and is used to imitate the feeling of estrogen in your body. If you don’t know what foods to look for that have high phytoestrogens counts, we’re here to help. Among the foods you should ingest more are:

  • Legumes

Legumes, especially soybeans are essential to add to your diet because they contain isoflavonoids, which is a form of phytoestrogens.

  • Peas and Beans

The more peas and beans you eat, the more coumestan you will add to your body.

  • Bran, Fruits and Vegetables

These food items contain lignans, which is another form of phytoestrogens that add estrogen to your system.

The one thing you will need to worry about is not eating too much of these food items. Too much estrogen-rich foods can have a negative effect on your body. For women, tissue growth can develop which would be especially dangerous for women who had breast cancer. Men aren’t out of danger when it comes to breast cancer and the estrogen can also have other negative effects on the male body and possibly lead to other problems and conditions.

Another way you can go about adding estrogen to your body naturally is by eating more fresh and organic food items. The lesser amount of chemicals you get in non-organic food items, the better off your overall health will be.

How does this help Men?

When a man has too little estrogen in their system, it can lead to osteoporosis and in worst cases, can even lead to the completely weakened bones that can fracture with ease. The weak bones can make even the easiest tasks dangerous for you to complete. Men will also have to be careful that their levels don’t get too high. When estrogen levels in the male body get too elevated, the risk of stroke increases, as do the chances of developing artery disease. Higher estrogen levels can also increase the chances of developing an enlarged prostate or even prostate cancer.

The Journal of the American Medical Association conducted a study where they examined 501 men with chronic heart failure. Scientists looked at the levels of estradiol, another form of estrogen. The study looked at the levels and found a correlation between the likelihood of death and levels of estradiol. Those with higher levels of estradiol were 133 percent more likely to die compared to those with lower estradiol levels.
